I must admit I've never done the visa application myself via a land border crossing, although friends have (I've only applied when passing through airport customs). But it's often a very stressful experience, so I can't fault someone for wanting to just get tf home after!
Well Caitlin, if you traveled that far for a shitty meetup, maybe you’d like to come to Seattle for our next, non-sanctioned but super pleasant Substack writers meetup. We had the first two in a noisy brewery and couldn’t hear a thing, but a couple of weeks ago we met at an arboretum and that was much better (if you like conversation). It’s all BYO, but hey, I’ll buy you one.
I know you were kidding, but just in case, do not decamp for Beehiiv. Sportswriter Craig Calcaterra moved from Substack to Beehiiv, and Beehiiv is inferior in every way. It really feels like a one-person app held together with bailing wire and duct tape.
Also, we spent a day in Buffalo a couple of years ago when camping near Niagara Falls, and had a lovely time., We visited the Martin house, went to city history museum (who knew Buffalo was the third of fourth largest city in the US back in the day?) and of course had dinner at Anchor Bar.
4-Mile Creek State Park. It's about 15 minutes north of the falls, right on Lake Ontario. And your state park parking pass from there gets you into the lot at Niagara Falls for free.
Buffalo needs more love! I was at a work conference at Canisius back in June and took some extra time to explore my hometown. Drove by the house I grew up in, the public library I first worked out (shout out to the Kenilworth branch), did an afternoon trip to the falls, and then the Totally Buffalo store. It was so great to be back and explore. We stayed at the Curtiss hotel which was maybe the best hotel I've ever stayed in??
Crossing the border and immediately turning back around is a rite of passage for many of us Canadians with US work visas!
You don't even stop for a LITTLE snackie??? Or a quick peek at the inferior side of the falls???

That t-shirt is truly hilarious.

If I so much as lived in the time zone, Tom, I'd be there in a heartbeat. :)

Where can you camp by the falls, pray tell??

I got an invitation to that event, RSVPed, and never heard from them again! I am glad I didn’t miss much.
You would've given me someone to talk to, though!!!

i think you just sold me a paid subscription, my second one on substack — first one being a YouTuber i’ve followed for decades 😚
