I've read a few scam stories, but honestly I quickly burnt out on them. I think Jacob's take is uniquely bleak on human nature. "Terrified" seems a bit much; personally I'd say "wary." But his second point, that "we secretly harbor a bit of envy for the scammers among us, who have found ways to work the system," I really don't get. I don't envy them a bit, I don't want to be them, and I can't imagine how they convince themselves to do these things.

Anyway, I still love your newsletter.

If more people were like you, Nomi, there would surely be both fewer scams and fewer scam stories. :)

Super interesting list. Ouch on the drive-by Canadian comment tho — did we give you some bad syrup or something? 🤪

For real though, Courtney Shea is a great writer, esp. with meaty stuff (far beyond just romance scams). Definitely worth checking out the rest of her catalogue beyond scammer features — despite the fact that the Toronto mag she writes for often gets flak for its clickbait (not untrue), it publishes a lot of awesome writers.

Now pass the pancakes. 😎🥞🍁

I live in Buffalo, ergo -- I love Canada!! I'm actually going to a Substack writers meet-up in Toronto tonight. But we also do maple here, so ... I can't speak to y'all's syrup.

Hahaha, yes I gotcha — that's awesome! Love the Buffalo connection (we grew up getting some of the local channels over the air 😂). And yes, y'all do have some good syrup, but I'll still pit Quebec against Vermont any day. 😎 Have fun tonight!
